Getting Ready for a New Group

Want a fun way to get your NEW students ready for an awesome year... give them a new book at Meet the Teacher.
Each Spring, Scholastic puts a book on sale related to back to school. Usually they are $1 each or a little bit of Scholastic Dollars. I usually stock up on a classroom set.
You can put them out for Meet the Teacher, which is usually the Friday before school starts for me.
Attach a sweet note instructing each parent to read this book to their child the night before school starts. This is homework no one minds doing.
Each student feels a little more prepared for their first day and each parent feels like they have helped their little learner.
Plus, it gives each student a chance to talk about their jitters or excitement about school starting.
(In Kindergarten, some kids have never left tier parents before... ever!)

I make sure I read this book at the beginning of the first school day too!
What do you hand out at Meet the Teacher?

  1. I alternate depending on what I have purchased. This year, I am handing out "The Kissing Hand". Some years it has been "Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom".

    1. I give books away a lot too. My school's population needs books... often! They had this book in the beginning of May. That is when I purchased it.
Thanks for your kind words... I share what I know and why I do it.

  6. That is a great idea! I hand out a few things at Meet the Teacher. I hand out a pirate goody bag since that's my theme. I hand out some kindergarten review packets to work on at home. I also hand out a "Sweet Dreams" card with confetti to put under their pillow the night before school. That was a hit with the kids last year. :)

  10. I do the same thing except I don't attach a note. However, I may this year. I'm so glad that the book this time was The Night Before Kindergarten. It hasn't been the $.95 book in 9 years. (How do I know that? That's when I started teaching kindergarten and I bought that book for my first group.)
