Where do you put it?
I put mine in the front of the classroom on my white board so each student and every adult can easily see it and use it. Put yours in a central location and in good viewing space for you and your students.I use this board for D5, literacy stations, and small groups.
I use this board only when my students are ready for it. I have to build up stamina in several areas before I can expect or allow students to choose their area and work correctly in that area. I am guessing we will start this board in October.
How do you use it?
I set mine up for each topic to be on its own sheet. That may you can change it based on your classroom needs and where your students are building stamina. For my picture example, I can have just working with words, reading to self, and reading to others as choices. I can add listening to reading when my students are ready, or take it away if they can't handle it. I also created a spot for working with a teacher and an aid/adult.Each student must have a name piece. I use my labels I made to match (of course!) You put up the choice board option that are open and are best for your room. For example under read to others, you can add the arrows I provided to show who is going to be reading with who. Under listen to reading, I added my specific reading stations.(White iPad, Black iPad, CD Player, Tape Player.)
Students move their name to their choice and go to that location. They may be called to work with a teacher or they may want to switch locations when a listening station becomes open. As long as they change where they are on the board, they are fine.
Why do I need one?
I can't promise that you need one, but I did. I created this for my room and the needs of little ones. I modified, added to the pack, and changed things to work with K students. for example, my students NEEDED a choice for working with their teacher because it blew their minds that they wouldn't have a place on the choice board when they were working with me.

What other questions do you have that I need to add to this post?

This made it so clear to me! I like your choice board. Do you limit the number of students that can make a certain choice? Do they get to make more than one choice a day?

I love this idea! Thank you so much for such an awesome post! I loved using choice boards for homework and such in upper grades. I would love to use them in Kinder too! Thank you for making this so very, very clear! Do you let them choose all of their Daily 5 or just one at a time? We usually tried to do 4-5 of the Daily 5 each day. This year I picked them for the kids but I'd love it if it was their choice!
ReplyDeleteI really like your choice board!! I think that would help keep them engaged while learning. That's a fantastic idea!
