After teaching K for a few years, I have learned some tricks to start a new year out right... and most of them include finishing my year a certain way. Yes, I always think about the next year before I leave on my last day of post planning.
Why? I am so glad you asked... because K is unlike any other grade, I find that most of my great prep work can be done in post planning so that my pre-planning is spend writing names on things- it takes me a whole day to do this- and to make changes to the room I dream up over the summer. And I have to clean the room. I do this during post as well, but a lot of dust appears over the summer.
Here is one of my student tables that is ready and waiting for me.
I have name plates ready to be taped down to {I tape before I write} and cubbies {I write and then I tape.}
Friday Folders just need names added.
I have my door decorating item out. I wait to decorate it until my hallway's floors get stripped and rewaxed. I like to get this done ASAP... most likely the first day of pre-planning.
I printed, laminated, and prepped my daily 5 things. I will put them up one piece at a time as we learn and use each structure.
I have die cuts waiting. I put one up under each letter of the alphabet as we learn about it. That way they know which letters we have learned and I recall which ones to go over.
name tag- one set for the front of agenda and another for the first day of school.
Phonics Supplies- I am going to attempt to do a much more multi-sensory approach this year and need those supplies. I have to prep the plates for the colored sand and cut the plastic canvas.
What do you prep for the next school year?

It looks like you are ready to start the year. I usually start gathering everything I need throughout the summer and then once my room is cleaned I go in an put it together.

I love it! I don't get this prepared because I use summer to think about these things, but I do try to strategically place things that are easy to pick right up and go.... My room has to be completely stacked in one corner so that is always the first thing - get it to look like a room again! Great ideas!!

Kindergarten Lifestyle
I make a folder of Beginning of the Year stuff with posters and print outs to be run off. On my computer I have a beginning of the year folder that has all my "Frog Book" stuff and name tags. I have a template of name tags on my computer and print them off at school once I have my list. My cubbies and hooks have velcro on them and are ready for tags once we get in...
ReplyDeleteI usually get everything prepped at home for the beginning of the following school year. I order back to school post cards, organize my calendar math folders, organize my writing binders, and my home/school communication folders so it's ready to go when I return. :)

Learning Is Something to Treasure
I do most of my prep when the teachers come back to school (little over a week) before school starts. I usually recruit my mom to come in and help me gets names and numbers on things like work books, supply boxes, name tags, cubbies, etc. I also get all my back to school night papers in order that will go out to families. I spend time over the summer rearranging/organizing/decorating my classroom as needed so that I can mostly focus on my planning materials when the teachers come back in August.

Falling Into First
I usually do all my prep during our pre-planning week and am usually rushing around. I love this idea. I'll have to keep it in mind for next year.

The Teacher's Backpack
What kind of things are you going to do with your multi-sensory approach to phonics? I am teaching Transitional K next year and I'm looking for ideas/things do to with them!

Be A Nut with Mrs. McNutt
My district requires us to take EVERYTHING down from the walls and ceiling and bulletin boards before the summer begins. Everything must be put away in cupboards and closets. So, unfortunately, lots of time is wasted during post and pre planning. I love your idea, though, and I would implement it if allowed.
ReplyDeleteMy principal requires us to pack our room completely (as if we were leaving the school) before summer begins. Everything off walls, out of cabinets, and into boxes piled into the center of the room. I make an "Open Me First" box where I keep everything I need for those first few days of unpacking. I also jot down notes in May (before packing) for August. I keep those notes with tape/sticky tabs, box cutter/scissors, markers, nametags, teacher essentials, passwords for logging in, etc. I also keep a packing list on the outside of the boxes. This helps maximize the time spent unpacking. The days before school are often spent in meetings and teachers are expected to set up classrooms after contract hours (read: our own time) so making efficient use of time is a must!
